Disturbing Facts On Eating Disorders In The United States


Eating disorders are serious, life-threatening illnesses that impact millions of people every year in the United States. In spite of the unprecedented growth of eating disorders in the past two decades, eating disorders research continues to be under-funded, insurance coverage for treatment is inadequate, and societal pressures to be thin remain rampant.

The exact frequency and distribution of eating disorders is unknown as the result of the high number of cases that go unreported or undetected due to the sensitive and secretive behaviors associated with these conditions. Eating disorders are known to be higher among females than males and athletes compared to non-athletes. Among athletes, the highest prevalence is seen among females participating in endurance (e.g., distance running) and aesthetic sports (e.g. gymnastics, diving, cheerleading, dance), whereas eating disorders are highest among male athletes participating in weight-class sports such as wrestling or boxing.
